Mobile Suit Gundam Debuts New Witch From Mercury Mecha Art and Story Details

More information about the new Mobile Suit Gundam anime, The Witch from Mercuryhas been revealed.

The official Twitter account for the series revealed new key art of the new series’ main character, whose name was revealed to be Suletta Mercury. The art also provides another new look at Suletta’s mobile suit, the Gundam Aerial. The series’ website was also updated with the first story details about the new show, which is set in a brand new continuity that is completely seperate from past entries in the franchise. Set in a world run by corporations, the new anime will focus on Suletta as she transfers into a technological academy run by Beneritt Group, a company who dominates the mobile suit industry.

The full synopsis from the website is as follows:

AS (Ad Stella) 122 ― An era when a multitude of corporations have entered space and built a huge economic system.A lone girl from the remote planet Mercury transfers to the Asticassia School of Technology, run by the Beneritt Group which dominates the mobile suit industry.Her name is Suletta Mercury.With a scarlet light burning in her pure heart, this girl walks step by step through a new world.

The website also revealed the first art and details about the show’s supporting cast, which includes Miorine Rembran, the daughter of the Beneritt Group’s president who seeks to rebel against her family, and Guel Jertuk, a tempermental older student who is also an ace mobile suit pilot. Line art of each character’s mobile suits was also released.

The new series will be directed by Hiroshi Kobayashi (Kiznaiver) and Ryo Ando (Food Wars! Shogeki No Shoma). The series will mark Code Geass scribe Ichiro Okouchi’s return to the sci-fi mecha genre, as they will serve as The Witch from Mercury‘s head writer. The anime will feature mecha designed by a number of industry veterans, including Kanatake Ebikawa, who previously worked on Eureka Seven and Gundam: Build Fighters, Iron-Blooded Orphans designer Kenji Teraoka, and Ko Inaba, who most recently provided mecha designs for the latest entry in the Macross franchise, Macross Delta: Zettai Live !!!!!!.

The Witch from Mercury was first announced in 2021, and the first look at the series was revealed last March. The new anime will be the first original series in the Gundam franchise since the debut of the critically acclaimed Iron-Blooded Orphans in 2015. While Gundam has featured female protagonists in some of its OVA releases, such as Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the PocketSuletta will be the first female main character to lead one a full-length TV series in the franchise’s 40 year history.

The TV series is scheduled to debut in Japan this October, but Bandai Namco is planning to release a “Prologue” anime to the show sometime this summer. Details about the show’s international release have yet to be announced.
