MCU’s Secret Invasion Undergoing Reshoots Over Ukraine Parallels

Disney +’s upcoming Secret Invasion series is set to bring the massive crossover story from the comics to the screen. However, months after the show was reported to have wrapped filming, it entered reshoots. Recent reports suggest these may not have been as minor as previously believed.

A report from industry scooper Daniel Richtman recently surfaced online, suggesting the reshoots for Secret Invasion were brought on due to a “devastating sequence” that may possess too many parallels to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in February. The latest reports describe attacks across Eastern and southern Ukraine, with the most recent being missile attacks in the Ukrainian town of Nikopol and the Kharkiv region. The European Union and the US have provided aid, with the US reportedly contributing $ 1.7 billion to the government of Ukraine, several weeks after approving an $ 820 million military aid package, which includes air defense systems.

Disney +’s Secret Invasion Series

It was reported in April that Secret Invasion had wrapped production. However, several weeks later, star Samuel L. Jackson, who is returning as the former director of SHIELD, Nick Fury, shared images of makeup and prosthetics for his character, indicating there was still filming left to complete. When asked about the state of production, Jackson said in June, “No. I’m not done. I am on my way back to London at some point in August. But I got to go back and do stuff for The Marvels and then I got to do stuff for Secret Invasion. “

Details concerning the exact plot and characters of the upcoming series are scarce. Recent reports have revealed Agent Everett Ross, played by Martin Freeman, will return in the show, along with War Machine, played once again by Don Cheadle. Along with Fury, who last appeared journeying through space at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Secret Invasion is set to see the return of Skrulls, who made their official debut in Captain Marvel and were shown to possess a natural ability to shapeshift. The show will also introduce actors Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir and Olivia Coleman to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though their respective roles are currently unknown.

Secret Invasion (written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by artists Leinil Francis Yu, Mark Morales and Laura Martin), saw the Skrulls launch a secret invasion by replacing several of Earth’s major superheroes and important figures with their agents. The reason behind it was a prophecy foretelling the destruction of the Skrull homeworld, compelling the Skrulls to prepare for a future overt conflict.

Secret Invasion does not currently have a release date but is expected to premiere sometime in 2023.
